Healthy Homes Hub: Sponsor the APPG for Healthy Homes and Buildings
9th December 2024
At Healthy Homes Hub, we are deeply committed to advocating for better housing standards that support the physical and mental well-being of all individuals. As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting healthier living environments, we are proud to sponsor the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Healthy Homes and Buildings (HHB). This group is dedicated to addressing the urgent need for healthier homes across the UK.
The Connection Between Homes and Health
The link between housing and health is undeniable. Research indicates that poor-quality housing is a major contributor to a wide range of health issues, including respiratory diseases, mental health challenges, and overall physical well-being. Damp, poor ventilation, inadequate heating, and noise are just a few of the factors that contribute to unhealthy living conditions. In fact, poor housing costs the NHS approximately £1.4 billion annually, with wider social costs reaching £18.5 billion each year.
The Healthy Homes Healthy Britain manifesto underscores the need for significant policy changes that put health and well-being first. These changes include improving energy efficiency, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and acoustic conditions, alongside essential upgrades to housing safety.
Key Goals of the Healthy Homes Healthy Britain Campaign
The Healthy Homes Healthy Britain campaign aims to bring about long-lasting, positive change by embedding health and well-being principles into housing policy. The manifesto advocates for:
A holistic approach to housing policy that prioritizes the health and well-being of residents, not just energy efficiency and decarbonization.
Higher standards for housing that ensure every home, whether newly built or retrofitted, maximizes physical and mental health outcomes.
The establishment of a Healthy Homes and Buildings Government department, responsible for overseeing housing improvements and ensuring accountability in meeting health standards.
The Importance of Legislation
The manifesto calls for legislation that prioritizes the health of occupants by improving housing quality. It also advocates for the appointment of an independent commissioner for Healthy Homes and Buildings, who will be tasked with defining and enforcing these standards.
In addition, the manifesto highlights the need for greater powers for England’s devolved nations and regions, enabling them to make meaningful changes to housing policies and practices.
The Economic and Social Benefits
Investing in healthy homes is not only beneficial for individual health but also for the wider economy. The economic benefits include reduced healthcare costs, improved productivity, and better educational outcomes. These factors contribute to the overall well-being of society and a healthier, more prosperous future.
Our Commitment to Change
At Healthy Homes Hub, we are proud to support the APPG’s mission to create a healthier and more sustainable housing environment for all. We believe in the right of every individual to live in a home that supports their health and well-being, and we are dedicated to advocating for policies that reflect this fundamental need.
We encourage policymakers, housing providers, and industry leaders to embrace the principles laid out in the Healthy Homes Healthy Britain manifesto and work together to create positive, lasting change.
