No one gets to Net Zero until we all get to Net Zero
18th November 2024
The path to achieving Net Zero has become overshadowed by technical jargon and economic concerns, often leaving its human-centred purpose behind. In a recent conversation, Jenny Danson, founder of the Healthy Homes Hub, sat down with Andy Cameron-Smith, Editorial Director of Unlock Net Zero, to refocus the discussion on what truly matters: creating better, healthier living environments for all.
Andy, with over 25 years in strategic communications, shared his journey from banking to climate change advocacy. His experience at the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) taught him the value of translating complex systems into relatable narratives. “Net Zero is a systems challenge,” Andy explained, “but the solutions need to resonate with people’s lives.”
The Human Element of Net Zero
Andy highlighted a critical issue in climate communications: the loss of the human story. Instead of focusing on polar ice caps and emissions targets, we must talk about tangible improvements—warmer, healthier homes, reduced energy bills, and better local environments. For example, the installation of solar panels or home insulation isn’t just a technical upgrade; it’s a means to healthier, more affordable living.
“People don’t resonate with kilowatt-hours or carbon offsets,” Andy said. “But tell them they’ll save money, breathe cleaner air, and feel prouder of their community? That’s when the narrative sticks.”
Collaboration Over Competition
Andy and Jenny emphasised the need for collaboration, not competition, in tackling the Net Zero challenge. “No one gets to Net Zero until we all get to Net Zero,” Andy said. He argued that the housing sector must share knowledge openly. Lessons from social housing retrofits, for instance, could guide private homeowners and policymakers.
“We’ve learned that retrofit isn’t just a technical task; it’s a deeply personal process for residents,” Andy explained. Housing providers need to approach decarbonisation with empathy, focusing on individual needs and aspirations.
Sharing best practices across the sector could significantly accelerate progress. Andy stressed the importance of framing decarbonisation as a collective opportunity rather than a financial burden. “We’re not competing here; we’re unpicking the Industrial Revolution to rebuild it better,” he said.
Unlocking the Economic Opportunity
Despite the challenges, the shift to Net Zero presents a massive economic opportunity. Andy pointed to the ripple effects of investment in green infrastructure, from creating jobs to lowering public health costs. For instance, poorly insulated homes burden the NHS with preventable health issues like asthma and damp-related conditions. Addressing these problems through decarbonisation benefits both residents and taxpayers.
“Decarbonisation isn’t just a cost—it’s an investment in a healthier, more prosperous future,” Andy said.
The Way Forward
The conversation ended with a call to action for housing providers, policymakers, and residents alike. Andy urged the sector to move away from siloed thinking and embrace systemic solutions. Jenny echoed his sentiments, noting that collaboration between organisations like Unlock Net Zero and the Healthy Homes Hub will be pivotal in scaling solutions.
Their message is clear: the Net Zero journey is not just about hitting targets. It’s about improving lives and ensuring that communities thrive in a changing climate. “Climate change isn’t coming; it’s here,” Andy said. “The question is: what are we going to do about it?”
Hints, Tips & Best Practices:
Speak Human: Simplify Net Zero communications. Focus on relatable outcomes—like healthier homes, lower bills, and better air quality—rather than technical jargon.
Peer Advocacy: Share real-life stories from residents who have retrofitted homes. Their experiences resonate far more than abstract numbers.
Collaboration is Key: Break down silos. Share lessons across organisations to avoid duplicating efforts. Use retrofit projects as blueprints for scalable solutions.
Invest Wisely: Combine Net Zero efforts with regular maintenance to address damp, mould, and heating issues holistically.
Engage Communities: Create local champions—trusted voices like teachers or neighbours—to build momentum for sustainable practices.
Frame the Opportunity: Decarbonisation isn’t just a cost; it’s a chance to innovate, create jobs, and improve health outcomes.
