AICO HomeLink’s Mission to Combat Damp and Mould in Homes: Insights from the UK’s First Action and Awareness Week
The link between home environments and personal health is well-documented, but as recent discussions bring to light, damp and mould can create a spectrum of hidden hazards. In a recent podcast, Mia Lennox-Berry and Sam from AICO HomeLink discussed the role of connected home technology in tackling these issues, explaining the importance of Damp and Mould Action & Awareness Week—a pioneering event aimed at uniting housing stakeholders in creating healthier, mould-free homes.
A Growing Concern for Health and Safety
The tragic story of Awwab Ishak, a young boy who passed away due to respiratory issues caused by mould exposure, has placed a renewed focus on home safety standards. Mia and Sam reflected on how such cases expose a need for urgent action and consistent national awareness. “We’re seeing a growing recognition of how serious damp and mould are, but it needs to translate into sustained action,” Sam explained. This week is about sparking that action and providing education for residents, landlords, and policymakers alike.
Tech-Enabled Solutions for Real-World Impact
The core of AICO HomeLink’s approach is their innovative technology, which combines sensors, data analytics, and AI to detect at-risk environments. These tools enable landlords to monitor conditions in real-time and address mould risk factors like humidity and temperature fluctuations before they escalate. Mia elaborated on this, noting that the use of data allows for tailored solutions: “Each home is unique, and with our technology, landlords can target specific issues based on a property’s needs.”
This tech-driven strategy isn’t just about monitoring but also about prevention. By embedding these tools, landlords gain insight into the “silent” symptoms of mould risk, which often go unreported due to social stigma or a lack of awareness.
Changing Perceptions and Reducing Stigma
A major barrier to addressing damp and mould effectively is the stigma surrounding these issues. Many residents may feel uncomfortable reporting mould, associating it with cleanliness or personal failure rather than structural inadequacies. “Part of the Awareness Week is breaking down these misconceptions,” Mia shared. With open dialogues and education, the team aims to reframe mould as a structural issue that landlords and tenants can tackle together.
Expanding the Conversation
Throughout the week, AICO HomeLink will host webinars and events featuring voices from across the sector, including a health expert from the NHS in Wales and air quality expert Simon Jones. By creating a platform for these conversations, the Awareness Week seeks to encourage cross-sector collaboration that supports a sustained, collective response to damp and mould.
How to Get Involved
AICO HomeLink’s toolkit is available for download on their website, offering resources for landlords, residents, and community groups to help raise awareness and dispel myths. “By working together,” Mia concluded, “we hope this initiative can grow into an annual event that leads to real, impactful change for residents across the UK.”
From understanding the nuances of mould formation to learning how technology can empower landlords to act, this podcast sheds light on an issue that affects millions yet remains under-discussed. With education and technology, AICO HomeLink and partners are paving the way for safer, healthier homes.
